☀️ SO YOU'VE GOT GOLDEN STEMS.
You've heroed the corner. Now let's keep it golden. Here's everything you need to know to max out your vase life—no boring science textbooks, just the good stuff.
☀️ The Intensive Golden Care Guide: How to Keep Your Stems Heroing for 10+ Days
--
1. Unwrap with Intent
Don't just rip the paper off (though we get the urge). Gently remove the wrap and let the stems breathe. They've been in transit for a day—they need to catch their breath.
2. The "Superhighway" Snip
Grab a pair of sharp florist shears or a very sharp kitchen knife. (Don't use scissors—they crush the stems). Cut 1-2 cm off the bottom at a sharp 45-degree angle.
Science bit: This increases the surface area for water intake and stops the stem from sitting flat against the bottom of the vase, which blocks absorption.
3. Leaf Stripping
Strip away any leaves that will sit below the waterline. Submerged leaves rot quickly, creating a bacteria soup that clogs the stems. We hate bacteria soup.
---
Water Temperature:
· Lukewarm is best (around 38°C). It dissolves the flower food faster and encourages rapid absorption.
· Exception: Bulbs (like tulips) prefer cold water.
The Flower Food Packet:
Don't throw it away! Dissolve it completely in your vase water before adding the stems.
· Why it works: It contains sugar (food), acid (lowers pH), and bleach (kills bacteria). It's a tiny miracle worker.
· Ratio: Usually 1 packet per liter. Don't overdo it—too much sugar makes the bacteria grow faster.
---
Where to put them:
· ☀️ A cool spot away from direct sunlight. (Sun heats the water and encourages bacterial growth).
· ❄️ Avoid AC vents, heaters, and ceiling fans.
· 🍌 Banana Alert: Keep your stems at least 1 meter away from fruit bowls. Ripe fruit (especially bananas, apples, and avocados) releases ethylene gas. This gas causes petals to drop and flowers to age prematurely. It's the silent killer of corners.
---
To get 10+ days of vase life, you need to do a "Water Change & Snip" every 3 days.
1. Empty the vase completely. Don't just top it up.
2. Clean the vase with warm soapy water (or a drop of bleach) to kill lingering bacteria.
3. Re-cut the stems by another 1cm (fresh cut = fresh drink).
4. Add fresh lukewarm water (and a tiny pinch of sugar if you're out of flower food—just a pinch!).

Symptom Diagnosis The Golden Cure
Droopy Sunflowers Sap clogged the stem. Cut 2cm off and place the stems only in boiling water for 30 seconds. Then straight back into cold water.
Wilted Hydrangeas Drama queens (we warned you). Dunk the entire flower head upside down in room-temp water for 5 minutes. They'll look brand new by morning.
Bent Tulips They grow towards light. Put them in a dark room for an hour, or wrap them tightly in newspaper overnight. They'll straighten out chasing the light.
Cloudy Vase Water Bacteria bloom. Empty, scrub vase with bleach/soap, re-cut stems, fresh water. ASAP.
Guard Petals on Roses Outer layers look brown/crushed. Gently peel them off. The inner bloom is pristine. Don't chuck the whole rose!
---
· Refrigerate at Night: If you want them to last for a special event, pop the vase in the fridge overnight (below 5°C). This slows down respiration.
· Misting: A light mist of water on the petals in the morning mimics morning dew and keeps them plump (except for tulips—they hate this).
· Coin Trick: Drop a copper penny in the water. It acts as a natural fungicide! (We're not sure if it works, but it looks very cool).

Did you order a bouquet with Bunny Tails or Craspedia (Billy Buttons)?
· DO NOT put them in water. They are already dry.
· Keep them in a dry, dark place out of direct sunlight to prevent fading.
· You can keep them forever. Literally. We've had some for two years. Dust them gently with a hairdryer on cool setting.
🌹 ROSES: They have outer "guard petals" that look bruised. Gently peel them off—it reveals the perfect bloom underneath. They're like little protective blankets.
🌷 TULIPS: They grow towards the light. Embrace the stretch. If they get floppy, re-wrap them in paper for an hour—they'll straighten out.
🌻 SUNFLOWERS: They drink HEAVILY. Check water level daily. If they droop, cut an extra 2cm off and put them in boiling water for 30 seconds (just the stems!). This clears the sap blockage.
💧 HYDRANGEAS: The drama queens. If they wilt, dunk the entire flower head in cool water for 5 minutes. We call it "flower rehab." It works every time.
🌾 DRIED STEMS (Bunny Tails/Craspedia): Ignore the water rules. Leave them dry. They last forever. (Seriously, we've had some in our studio for 2 years.)
Change water and re-trim stems every 3 days or water turns cloudy. Bacteria is the enemy.
